At that point, Monsignor Ghika was also acutely aware of what was going on in Eastern Europe. He, too, would taste intense suffering under the Communist regime; after witnessing – and trying everything to bypass – the gradual narrowing of civil rights, in November 1952, Ghika was arrested for the crime of “high treason”.
