Since many local anesthetic drugs block electrically excitable sodium channels, and interact also with other cationic channels including the nicotinic acetylcholine ones, the Authors used the Xenopus oocytes functional expression system to study the effect of benzydamine on a muscle type nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) using the two electrodes voltage-clamp technique.
While benzydamine did not evoke currents by itself at -60 mV in oocytes uninjected or injected with nAChR complementary Ribonucleic Acid (cRNA), the amplitude of I(Ach) in the presence of benzydamine was reduced in a dose-dependent manner [see figures 7 and 8].
