This is for a text from Spain and is for the UK, so I'm looking for answers from people who know the Spanish education, please.

It is for children in compulsory education.

Does "repetir curso" mean retake the whole year or just one subject?

Agree with Mark As a mother of two grown-up daughters (one of whom is a secondary school teacher), grandmother of six children aged between 16 and 1 and wife of a retired secondary school teacher. We all live in Spain and yes, the number of Spanish children who have to retake the whole year is high, though the system is similar to the old School Certificate in the UK, which was abolished in 1951! All subjects are compulsory.

Thanks Mark Throughout this document, I have been referring to "retaking the whole year," so it's helpful to hear that is also your understanding. However, I had to resit my O Level History during my A levels, so I started questioning whether the same might apply here. Based on this report, the number of Spanish pupils having to retake years is quite high, I must say!

I live in Spain and have a daughter, nephew and niece in the education system. You cannot repeat a course - course is a specifically US concept anyway. 'Curso' means school year or academic year - and pupils who do not get the minimum marks required to progress - normally 4 out of 10 - have to do the whole academic year again, leaving their classmates and joining a class that will be made up of younger children. There is no such thing as just redoing one subject - if you fail one subject then you have to work over the summer and take a test in September. So 'repetir curso' in the context you mention is '2.9 million students/pupils might have to retake the academic year' - I prefer pupils in the secondary context to distinguish from University students but lately the trend is to use the term for both....

Thanks Barbara, but.... in schools in the UK, we don't do "courses"; we do "years" and "subjects". So, for example, you could be required to retake the whole year or just one subject (through extra teaching). I'm not sure whether, in the context of ESO (compulsory secondary education) and post-compulsory education, whether repetir means to retake the whole year or just one particular subject....

Repetir Curso VS Repetir UN Curso The second option, "repetir UN curso", would refer to taking just one course over, I would think, as opposed to a whole year of studies.

This is the phrase used in the Caribbean when a student fails a course or gets a low grade in it. Repeat a class is also used in the USA.

disagree Mark Solomon : The poster specifically mentioned that the text was for the UK. You do not have courses in UK schools, only at University and you cannot repeat them! A class is the collection of people who physically study together - again, you cannot repeat them.
