French term

Docteur de troisième cycle

French to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Higher education award (France)
My attempt is simply "doctor" but I am uncertain
The document I am translating is an award of a diploma "Doctorat de troisième cycle"
The institute concerned does not seem to have a website with its awards described in English

Discussion

AllegroTrans (asker) Aug 9, 2021:
Thanks Writeway That is what I did, and since there were other terms with no direct equivalents in my document, I added a translator's note
writeaway Aug 4, 2021:
Surely this should be left in FR with an Eng. equivalent in ( ). Like post-graduate doctor, as suggested in previous Kudoz questions for this term

Docteur, (Ph.D)

All doctoral degrees are, by their very nature, in the 3e cycle.
By tradition, the title is usually retained in the native language however, it is becoming increasingly common to use Ph.D.

CQFD. ;-)

So in a translation into French, I would not add any translation of "troisième cycle", except maybe "doctoral degree".

This should have been just a reference post in fact. Sorry!

Doctor of X

Doctorate

Depending on exact context, one of the above.

Even Doctor will do in some situations.

The European system is split into three cycles, I forget the exact wording used, but it's Bachelor's (three years)-Master's (five years)-Doctorate (six years).

(That's three, five and six in total. In other words 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. The link explains it far better than I can!)

My judgement is that "third-cycle" would be largely redundant (as in "Third-cycle Doctor"), a bit like saying "cold ice", but of course you can include it if you wish.

Compare with:

Second-cycle Bachelor's Degree
Third-cycle Master's Degree

Just doesn't sound right, not used.

To Chris: Jaysus Chris, don't let that one out of the bag, Conchuir is bad enough!

(I'm sure my French functionary friends would "love" it if I availed myself of my right to call myself Conchuir MacAmhlaoibh! I could demand that respect for my human rights demands the use of the relevant fada too (only one, unfortunately)).

Thanks polyglot45!

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Agree with Samuël's ccomment about the DE de docteur vs Ph.D.

PhD

The Doctor of Philosophy is the exact equivalent to the "docteur de 3e cycle" (by opposition to "docteur d'état", which does not exist any more). The

However, we never say or write "Doctor of Philosophy", whether on a CV or any other document. It is always PhD (or Ph.D. or DPhil, although the latter is much less used.)

Doctorate is too fuzzy since it could also cover, e.g., MD.

Tertiary-Level Qualified / Tertiary-Grade / Doctor

BTW a couple of French medical-doctor cousins of mine practising in the Versailles and St. Could areas of Paris who can count to three - and who qualified about half a century ago - call themselves 'Tertiary-Grade Doctors' in the Queen's English.
