"We then had to eat the carpet, as they say".
It is abot a journalist that worked for a paper that wrote an article. She won a Pulitzer prize for that and then it turnet out that the story was invented and the prize was withdrawn and the reporter must resigned, and the editors in the paper had to "eat the carpet". I think of something like "aguantar la vergüenza o la sanción", but I would like to know if someone has a better idea.

Por ejemplo, “chew the carpet” significa literalmente “masticar la alfombra”. Pero cuando alguien utilice esta expresión no se refiere en absoluto a ninguna alfombra ni a masticar nada. Su significado en español sería “tragarse el orgullo”.

He añadido "agachar las orejas" a mi propuesta porque es una expresión muy natural en español que recoge bien la idea y encaja con el tono informal del original.
