Apr Fal.

Portuguese to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters High School Transcripts
Brazilian transcripts from EE Dicesano in MG, Brazil.
Table (also see attached image):
1o Bimestre
Disciplinas Apr Fal.
Arte 19,00 0:50
Biologia 15,00 3:20
Filosofia 25,00 8:20
etc.

I am assuming "Apr" is "aprovado" and "Fal." is "faltou". What is strange is that the numbers seem like classroom hours. The transcripts are from 2021, so maybe because of the pandemic the classes were online and they recorded how many hours the person missed? Any insight?

Discussion

Oliver Simões Dec 13, 2021:
@Muriel Got it. Sorry, I hadn't seen your comment under "present and missing".
Muriel Vasconcellos Dec 13, 2021:
@Oliver I was commenting on the answer 'Present' and 'Missing'. I was saying that it wouldn't work because of the reports for "Educação Física" and "Química". In each case the second column is 1.4. If that answer had been correct, column 1 would have been 23.6.
Oliver Simões Dec 13, 2021:
@Muriel The total for each discipline equals the performance outcome for bimester #1 plus bimester #2, as far as I can tell. I haven't noticed any discrepancies in the ones I checked.
Muriel Vasconcellos Dec 13, 2021:
The numbers don't "add up" I looked at the numbers (the photo was very helpful). I think you're right about the "faltou" part and that it's about class participation. The column headed "Apr." looks more like a total from which the next column is subtracted. The word "Aprovado" seems reasonable.

Present and missing

This interpretation of the data makes sense. I'd say so because estate schools in Brazil commonly have classes of 50 minutes, precisely... as the numbers on the sheet are all matching to this fifty in fifty counting system, I'd say it is a pretty safe bet

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : I looked carefully at the numbers. According to your reasoning, they would add up together and they don't. See my longer explanation in the Discussion.

Grade Abs. (= absences)

Apr = Aproveitamento
Fal. = Faltas

Obrigado, Alexandre!
agree Muriel Vasconcellos : My only question would be the numbers in the absences column, which don't seem to follow any pattern that I can see -- unless different classes meet for different lengths of time. But it makes sense that "Fal." stands for absences.

Thank you, Muriel. Indeed the hours are a bit awkward. I'm not sure about "Apr", though.

Performance/Outcomes; Absences

I understand "Apr." to mean "aproveitamento [do aluno]" or "aproveitamento [escolar]".

aproveitamento do aluno: student performance; learning outcomes

The total for each discipline equals the sum of the outcomes for bimesters no. 1 and 2.
