this term appears multiple times on various sales and reimbursement receipts from a well-known French retailer of electronics, followed by a numeric code. Any suggestions?

See my discussion entry, which includes a picture of a receipt with this on it. The well known retailer is FNAC.

: Does seem more logical, now we have seen it in context; explains the use of lower-case.

You should be able to tell if it was even a credit card transaction?

In the light of the extra context now confirming the collocation with EMV, I feel much more confident about this suggestion.

Par exemple pour la gestion de caisse il y'a une fonction qui vous permet d’effectuer une entrée ou sortie d’espèces avec ce que l'on appelle un motif.
Ici le motif est prédéfini pour telle carte ou telle transaction avec un code dédié.
Depending on the retailer "motif" could be linked to cards for special or immediate discounts as Althea said
If you take Fnac for example:
with the example provided by Phil and others examples found on the net:
0013 Fnac+, 0006 Carte Fnac 3ans, 0007 Carte One, ... all refer back to card offers here:
https://www.fnac.com/choisir-carte
Not familiar with these cards but it should be sthg usual like holders will benefit from an advantage: % of purchases made with the Fnac card is credited to the Fnac loyalty "account" and possibly gift vouchers.
EMV is the norm of the technology used for the payment; so you can found for example on receipt
EMV sans contact, EMV NFC, EMV , depending on how the person made the transaction.

I think it could be "Motif", reason. It's always followed by a four-digit code, and then a narrative. My example says 0006 ADHERENT 3 ANS, and another one I found said 0026 RECRUT FNAC/FNAC+. You said some of them are "reimbursement receipts", so maybe it means "reason for refund".
