English term

bantam-crackly

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
I'd need some help with some poetic/descriptive language in the novel I'm translating:

"He reminds me of a cartoon rooster, his bantam-crackly laugh, southern accent, the swift, jilty way he moves."

I can understand 'crackly', but what does the word 'bantam' add to it?

Discussion

Chris Ellison Feb 25, 2022:
I don't think it's Foghorn Leghorn... ...he had a rich, velvety voice, not at all "bantamy". ;-)
Althea Draper Feb 25, 2022:
Although it doesn't mention it explicitly, the cartoon rooster that he reminds the person of could be Foghorn Leghorn.

English term (edited): a bantam-crackly laugh
Selected

a laugh that is clicky and rattly and sounds like small chicken

A bantam is a small breed of chicken.
Crackly - like the defects in a damaged vinyl record when you play it.

The 'bantam' part of the description could also relate to the way he throws his head back every time he laughs like the rooster does when he crows. Bantams are also quite feisty.

a small person with temperament, and the explosive sound of his laughter

This is a vivid metaphor, so you may have to adapt it to the target language.

Bantam poultry are small breeds, sometimes smaller versions of well known full-sized breeds. True bantams are varieties that were naturally small before domestication, and still are.
Often the hens are docile, but the roosters have a reputation for being temperamental or aggressive.
I do not know the difference between the way a bantam rooster crows and a full-size rooster crows, but they probably vary from one variety to another, and an expert could distinguish them.
