French term

chiodeur

French to English Other Journalism Video clip for a documentary
There's a clip of a man working in a car factory, who's complaining about his job. He says that they're always talking about performance, imrpovement, going faster etc, but it's unrealistic. Then he says something that sounds like (the audio on the clip is poor, especially as there is a lot of background noise) 'chiodeur'. It does, however, seem to confuse the interviewer, who repeats the word to confirm it. The man then says 'c'est un métier de chiodeur' - any help decifering what this word could be would be much appreciated!

See at about 13:00 in the video. The man speaks very clearly.

la méthode shyoda dans l'industrie automobile A travers le portrait de quelques ouvriers de l’usine de Sandouville, évocation du quotidien du travail à la chaine qui ne s’arrête jamais, du stress des cadences, de la réduction du temps de pause, de l’angoisse de voir appliquer la méthode de travail à la japonaise, la méthode shyoda (http://pedagogie.ac-limoges.fr/ses/?debut_article_langue=580...

SHYODA @Tony, you're exactly right, it is a Japanese term. Looked through the other info I was sent around this clip and found the term 'shyoda'. What it means, I don't know as I can't find any info online, but at least I have the word now!
Conor McAuley Mar 25, 2022:

On the back of Tony's post...

chiada / chiader : travailler avec soin

@ Asker It's not a corruption of some Japanese term, is it? There are so many buzz-words of Japanese origin in use these days in 'time-&-motion' work...
Verity Roat (asker) Mar 25, 2022:
I don't think they're speaking Spanish haha. I've managed to work out a longer passage where this word is mentioned:

Des déplacements, c’est-à-dire, une personne, je sais, pas, pour faire un véhicule, elle va faire peut-être dix pas…ou si nous avec ***chiadeur*** on peut réduire à deux pas, elle mettra peut-être un visse de plus, c’est par contre un récupe de pas, donc c’est vrai qu’à la fin de la journée, si c’est tellement moins fatiguant de mettre un visse de plus que de faire un pas chaque fois.
Séverine Watson Mar 25, 2022:
Just to spice things up, if that word sounds more like "chiodeur" dans "chiadeur" (yikes!) and if your speaker has a Spanish accent, it could potentially be 'joder' (fuck).

Shame that the audio is so awful, I feel your pain!
Verity Roat (asker) Mar 25, 2022:
It would definitely identify my client, unfortunately!
philgoddard Mar 25, 2022:
You could upload it somewhere like this:

I don't think confidentiality is an issue unless the recording identifies your client. And your transcription doesn't give us enough to go on, which is not your fault.
Verity Roat (asker) Mar 25, 2022:
Surrounding text is difficult (I can't stress how poor the audio quality is), but it sounds like:
On parle toujours de performance, d’un coup
[mumble mumble] sont alliés à la vitesse.
Vous avez [mumble mumble] mais **chiodeur**
Interviewer : Non ?
**Chiodeur**
Interviewer : Oh.
Un méthode de **chiodeur**.
Re: posting the recording: a) I don't think I can on ProZ? And n) I signed an NDA.
Conor McAuley Mar 25, 2022:
Samuël might be on to something there.
Conor McAuley Mar 25, 2022:
Hahaha, a bit like fishing stories from Marseille!

"Vous me pardonnerez l'expression", I would say.
Samuël Buysschaert Mar 25, 2022:
Peut-être "chiadeur"?

Qui chiade, travailleur - Qui travaille beaucoup.

bûcheur (familier)

philgoddard Mar 25, 2022:
Conor I learned one useful thing from your reference: "chier une pendule".
And I wondered how the French say "pardon my French".
Conor McAuley Mar 25, 2022:
I was just thinking today, Phil, we need a KudoZ system for subtitling now, too.
philgoddard Mar 25, 2022:
Could you give us the surrounding text, please. And is there any chance you could post the recording?
Verity Roat (asker) Mar 25, 2022:
**méthode** de chiodeur I think he says 'méthode' de chiodeur. He's definitely talking about speeding up a production line.

whore

Sentence 'c'est un métier de chiodeur' translates "it's a whore job".
The sense is that the man criticizes the working style typical of the commercial world.
