Južno i severno blotovanje
"Istorijat - Blotovanje je izmislio, prvi primenio i razradio profesor Edinburškog fakulteta Edwin M. Southern 1975. godine. Zatim su i drugi istraživači počeli da koriste ovu tehniku, a nazvali su je Southern blot po izumitelju, čije se prezime može prevesti kao Južni. Pri Južnom blotu transferuje se, odnosno detektuje DNK. Na osnovu ove, kasnije su razvijene druge metode blotovanja, koje su dobijale nazive po preostalim stranama
sveta: Northern (Severni) blot, Western (Zapadni) blot i Eastern (Istočni) blot.
Blotting u bukvalnom prevodu sa engleskog znači upijanje, odnosno adsorpcija, a odnosi se na membranu koja ''upija'' materijal (DNK, RNK ili protein) sa gela, tj. na transfer materijala sa gela na membranu.
Tipovi blotovanja
Postoji nekoliko tehnika blotovanja, a u zavisnosti od toga koji makromolekul ispitujemo. Najčešće se koriste i pominju: Southern blot (za detektovanje DNK), Northern blot (za RNK), Western blot (za proteine), Eastern blot (za post-tranlacione proteinske modifikacije). Pored ovih, postoje i druge tehnike blotovanja, koje su nastale kao modifikacija prethodnih: Northwestern blot, Southwestern blot (za DNK-proteinske interakcije), Far-Western blot, Far-Eastern blot i Dot-blot."
