Loose particles of carbon or other materials that have been sloughed off (e.g., carbon slough or slough) on the HDD can affect a cantilever for read-out and can result in errors and device malfunction. Slough can cause damage through scratching a surface and creating surface voids; and the surface voids can lead to failure of the hard disk drive.

The polymer composite (including the functionalized carbon nanotubes) may advantageously increase resistance to sloughing, reduce an amount of slough, reduce a size of slough, etc., in materials and products formed therefrom.

Parts formed from the polymer composition have improved sloughing properties as compared to parts formed from compositions including conventional carbon nanotubes.

Plastics can be rendered conductive through addition of conductive fillers, most often carbon based materials such as carbon black, carbon fiber, and carbon nanotubes (CNT). Carbon blacks are relatively inexpensive but slough (i.e., shed microscopic particles), which can result in conductive carbon particles deposited on other components and can lead to short-circuiting and malfunctioning. Carbon fibers and CNTs have a lower tendency for sloughing as compared to carbon blacks. While carbon fiber has a lower tendency for sloughing as compared to carbon nanotubes, typically larger amounts of carbon fiber are required to reach a particular level of conductivity as compared to CNTs.

Example 5: Graph Electrical Conductivity PA6 and PET
[0084]

Volume resistivity was measured on different compounds prepared with carbon network prepared using the recipe according to example 1, in different loadings in Polyamide 6 (Akulon F223D) and PET (Ramapet N1), by means of a twin-screw extruder (LID=38, D=25 mm). The results are plotted in FIG. 5. The percolation curves show good dosage control in the static dissipative range and that high conductive performances are achieved at high loadings. At the opposite, carbon black percolation threshold for conductive applications was found at lower dosages, i.e. <20% wt, and dosage control in the static dissipative range was unsatisfactory. Moreover, carbon networks compounds did not slough up to 30% wt loading, whereas carbon black compounds are known to be sloughing also at low filling degree.

Rozróżnia się cztery mechanizmy zrywania biofilmu:

a) Erozja - usuwanie komórek mikroorganizmów z powierzchni biofilmu powodowane siłami ścinającymi.

7.1.2.3 Detachment

The detachment process of a biofilm can be divided into three processes: erosion, abrasion and sloughing. Detachment via erosion occurs as a result of fluid shear forces and only affects the surface of the biofilm, removing single or small clusters of cells. Abrasion, like erosion, only affects the surface of the biofilm; however, this detachment process occurs due to the collision of particles. Sloughing refers to the instant removal of large clusters of the biofilm, which has significant influence on the biofilm morphology and depending on the strength of the biofilm, this process could lead to the complete removal of the biofilm - https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/detachment-...

Releases*** ‘carbon dust’ (carbon sloughing)***; therefore unsuitable for cleanroom applications
Only possible colour is black
Flow properties and surface quality decrease at higher % of carbon black
Especially suitable for ESD applications
Mechanical properties are not optimal
Note from asker:
Thanks! That was very helpful.
