input
French to English
Tech/Engineering
Electronics / Elect Eng
Chips/circuit boards/engineering/IT - subtitles
SUBTITLES
The English word "input" is used in French, correctly or incorrectly I don't know.
The company involved designs chips and circuit boards for very specific purposes (confidential).
An employee (a Spanish-speaker, I think) with English as a second language and with a PhD in Engineering is speaking (subtitles):
"Au niveau technique, c'est vraiment intéressant.
Parfois, dans les autres boites, ce n'est pas comme ça.
Vous allez juste recevoir ***un input****.
Il faut faire ça.
Il sort quelque chose et après le prochain projet, il faut que tu continues.
Ici, il y a un contexte.
Donc c'est possible de comprendre ce qui se passe derrière le projet.
C'est pour ça que c'est intéressant."

input
I think this is appropriate. better to maintain the target word. Besides, the word is very technological.
Example sentence:
A great input is necessary for...

input
It's very hard to tell from the context. Still, 'input' sounds good to me.

: It's not really "hard to tell" here: they're talking about a project, it is 'input' in the purely intellectual sense, rather than any kind of physical electronic thing.

Discussion
Tony, well, I don't think it is the right term, in ordinary language, at least. The guy got instructions, or an internal order. He didn't strike me as the kind of person who is showy with language. Neither did the company, they actually use the word "problème" and not some equivalent of challenge, which is refreshing!
It's our job to be the language police!
Plus, there isn't really one neat, concise term in FR that sums up everything as this one does.
Inasmuch as an awful lot of franglais has become assimilated into the language, I think this needs to be acccepted as authentic FR — in management, it's very common to find EN terms used, particularly where they are widely accept in the field worldwide
I'm afraid we just have to move with the times, and if the French themsevles don't mind, i hardly feel it is our place to object.
My feeling was that the person used the term a little incorrectly.
The guy, I think, is basically complaining about companies where he previously worked, where he just received technical specs and no context ("The component will be used in an X/Y/Z device"). In his current job, he's told what the purpose of his work is...sounds a bit like the old translator's conundrum: you're told, "Translate this", but you're not told the context or the purpose of your work, so your work has no "external" meaning.
