German term

ausgearbeitete Projekte

German to English Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
From a letter, written in France in April of 1939 by a Jewish man, planning his voyage to Australia:

The sentence "Ich bekomme noch ausgearbeitete Projekte aus Paris" seems out of place here. Everything before and everything after is regarding the voyage, tickets, shipping lines, travel routes, etc. Perhaps "ausgearbeitete Projekte" means something other than "completed projects"?

Discussion

Jacqueline Ball Jul 18, 2023:
I do not think the "ausgearbeitet" needs to be translated into English in the context of this text.
It is possible that the reason the writer mentions these "Projekte" he is still getting from Paris is by way of an explanation for his request for help (i.e. I don't have time, because I'm still working on these projects): "If you have time, please look into the best routes". The mention of the projects justifies the request for help.
HOWEVER, as other people have said, without the previous correspondence between the writer and recipient (or other context) it is not possible to know for sure what these "ausgearbeitete projekte" are, which is is another good reason for simply rendering as "projects" in English, I would say.
Björn Vrooman Jul 16, 2023:
@Anne Would fit the time period, though I'm pretty sure there's nothing nefarious or secretive going on here.

Cook is most likely a reference to Thomas Cook, which was founded in 1841 and was sold to a Belgian company in 1928: "Frank and Ernest Cook, the two surviving grandsons, sell the business to the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grands Express Européens."
https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/thomas-cook-history-t...

Even before being sold, the business and the shipping line seem to have had an agreement in place:
"Agreement between Thomas Cook/P&O with supporting correspondence, 1888-1908...

General Agreement as to Mail Steamer Passage Rates between Messageries, Norddeutscher Lloyd, P&O and Orient, 12 Oct 1900."
https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-518754

I'm sure it's the same for Aberdeen. The writer of the letter is therefore looking at sea maps to figure out what route to take. I actually think "hier bei Cook" doesn't mean he's employed there but went to one of their offices.

Best wishes
Anne Schulz Jul 15, 2023:
A strange, vague language which reminds me of communications in former GDR, oscillating around and between potential subjects, such that nothing be pinned down and nobody could be held responsible for having made a specific statement. Who are "Wir bei Cook"? The management of a company called Cook, with a professional interest in "Schiffskarten" (maps/charts)? Or a family anticipating occupation and institutionalisation of antisemitism in France and planning their escape? I can imagine that this person is expecting itineraries for their own voyage ("ausgearbeitete Projekte") and is advising the addressee to research a way for escape, too.

That's funny ... ... because I'd immediately thought of an architect - quite close to your information...
Timoshka (asker) Jul 14, 2023:
@ Steffen Walter The writer of the letter has the title "Herr Ing." before his name, so I'm assuming some sort of "engineer."
Steffen Walter Jul 14, 2023:
True This sentence might well be a reference to previous letters.
Björn Vrooman Jul 14, 2023:
PS Only thing I don't agree with RE Steffen's post is that the sentence seems out of place (maybe because I could see myself doing the same thing!).

These may look like random utterings sprinkled throughout a conversation, but they aren't as long as you know what was said or written previously (that is, you won't find anything else about it in this letter).
Björn Vrooman Jul 14, 2023:
Important note To reiterate what my colleagues said below: "ausgearbeitet" doesn't mean completed. It's more like "...our office in Paris also told me they'll send over some already fleshed-out ideas..."--"ausgearbeitet" simply means you're past the rough draft.

Steffen Walter Jul 14, 2023:
Out of place This sentence seems out of place indeed. Is there any indication of the profession of the author elsewhere in the text? This might help identify the nature of these "projects".

On a completely different note, "ausgearbeitete Projekte" might also refer to detailed travel itineraries (schedules, routes, connections, destinations etc.), but I am by no means sure since this usage would be quite strange.
seehand Jul 14, 2023:
vom Lesen älterer Briefe her würde ich hier eher auf "detaillierte" Projekte tippen - aber eben eher "Gefühl" als "Sicherheit"

fully fledged projects

I assume this means he's busy with work, and is asking the recipient of the letter to do some research for him. And "ausgearbeitet" perhaps implies that the groundwork has been done.

fully-elaborated projects

Project Elaboration is a complex period in a project development. It starts when a project gets initiated and approved as worth of interest and investments. Project managers begin drilling down into more detail to derive estimate on costs and resources of the project. The purpose of project elaboration is actually developing an idea into a specified estimate and plan of action, and as a result having strong grounds for requesting funds, administrative support and resources for project realization. Project elaboration includes:

Gathering and considering the customer requirements;
Feasibility study of requirements and adjusting them;
Detailed analysis and documenting of the project scope;
Analysis and assessment of the project risks;
Full specification of deliverables;
Complete conceptual and technical design;
Detailed listing of resources to be engaged into the project;
Detailed estimation of the project costs;
Handling high-risk elements of the project;
Estimate of the overall schedule;
Finalize elaboration with a detailed project plan;
