For VMBO students, the number of exam subjects in their final year varies between five and seven, depending on their chosen profile. HAVO students need to take their national exams in at least seven subjects, and VWO students in eight subjects. The students have to take several tests and practical assignments for each chosen subject. These are called the school exams and are created by the teachers. The combined grades of these school exams count for 50% of their final grade. The other half consists of the national exams (Centraal Eindexamen), which are the same for every school of the same level in the country, and are held at exactly the same time.

'combination grade' lijkt met name in combinatie met 'classes' te worden gebruikt (Google) en is daarom waarschijnlijk niet geschikt.

What is a combination grade?

A combination class is formed when students from two consecutive grades are placed in one classroom under the supervision of one teacher. Students in combination classes retain their respective grade-level assignments and receive appropriate grade-specific curriculum.

Principals’ views of combination grade classes

The study of combination classroom grouping shows that children learn equally as well in combination classrooms as they do in regular graded classrooms.
Skeptics of combination classes have always been fearful that children do not achieve as well in combination grade classrooms as they do in single grade classrooms.
The findings of this study and previous studies indicate that their fears are certainly unfounded. Scholastic achievement in combination grade classrooms is no different from achievement in non-combination grade classrooms.

In de Tweede Fase geldt een slaag-zakregeling waarin bij bepaalde resultaten compensatie is vereist om te kunnen slagen. Om zo'n regeling met compensatie mogelijk te maken en de regeling overzichtelijk te houden, is het combinatiecijfer in het leven geroepen. Het combinatiecijfer is het rekenkundig gemiddelde van de 'kleine vakken/onderdelen' die met een cijfer op de cijferlijst staan.
Voor het berekenen van het combinatiecijfer worden de op de cijferlijst vermelde afgeronde cijfers (bestaande uit gehele getallen) gemiddeld. Vervolgens wordt het gemiddelde weer afgerond op het nabij liggende gehele getal: 5,5 wordt dus een 6 en 5,45 een 5.

Een aantal vakken maakt verplicht deel uit van het combinatiecijfer:

• Profielwerkstuk
• Maatschappijleer
• Algemene natuurwetenschappen (vwo)

Daarnaast kunnen scholen kiezen om de volgende vakken toe te voegen:

• Literatuur
• Godsdienst of Levensbeschouwing
• Klassieke Culturele Vorming of Culturele en Kunstzinnige Vorming

Het combinatiecijfer wordt bepaald door het gemiddelde te nemen van de op hele cijfers afgeronde cijfers voor de onderdelen, en dat gemiddelde weer op helen af te ronden. Hierop is veel kritiek, omdat het nu zo kan zijn dat een leerling die voor een meerderheid van zijn vakken die samen het combinatiecijfer uitmaken een hoger cijfer heeft dan een andere leerling, maar dat die laatste leerling door de beschreven manier van afronden & bepalen van het combinatiecijfer uiteindelijk toch een hoger eindcijfer krijgt.

@Barend: since it has a very specific meaning, I think it would be good to explain it somewhere/somehow, unless Asker's surrounding text already does of course. the more I look into it, the more I think the explanation is actually more important than how you choose to translate it.

agree with phil There is no real official translation. However, NUFFIC is usually a pretty trusty source. I seem to remember that Chris Hopley (https://www2.proz.com/translator/23534 ) worked on the original NUFFIC glossary, you might want to ask him. Although I think any of these ought to cover it.

I think you've answered your own question.

There's no 'official' translation, because who decides what's official? That only applies in international law, and international organizations such as the European Union.

agree Barend van Zadelhoff : I think 'combined mark average' ('mark' singular) is more correct English, yes? Not many G-hits for both (marks; mark) and it not always has the same meaning.

Comment: "Thank you to all who responded! ‘Combined’ feels superfluous; perhaps ‘grade average’ (US) would be sufficient. ‘GPA’ already exists for the entire transcript; this is similar to a ‘[subject area] GPA’ for a specific section of a transcript (cijferlijst). The use of ‘combined’ feels like a Dutchism… ‘Combined grade average’ would seem to work for a Dutch context, North American transcripts. For a native speaker, the singular (‘mark’/‘grade’) would sound correct - thank you, Barend. ‘Combined score average’ appears to be one official rendering, although it sounds odd to a native ear."
