French term

s’affranchir

French to English Science Physics Spectrometry
Context:
La spectrométrie synchrone permet de détecter uniquement la composante alternative du spectre d’un rayonnement optique émis par une source modulée. Cette technique a notamment pour avantage de permettre de s’affranchir d’un rayonnement optique ambiant parasite ou de la lumière du jour, lors des mesures.

Editing task and this has been translated as:
Lock-in spectrometry makes it possible to detect only the alternating component of the spectrum of optical radiation emitted by a modulated source. One of the advantages of this technique is that it allows measurements to be made without the need for ambient optical radiation or daylight.

I read it as a means to overcome the ambient light pollution.
Am I correct?
TIA Chris.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Dec 1, 2023:
@ Bashiqa Si la mesure ne doit pas être perturbée par le rayonnement optique diffusé, celui-ci ne peut être protégé physiquement ou compensé que par une interférence avec le même rayonnement décalé de 180°, ce qui n'est possible qu'avec une lumière laser à une fréquence singulière.
Emmanuella Nov 22, 2023:
@ Bashiqa - En effet, je ne pense pas que le terme ' s'affranchir' soit approprié.
Bashiqa (asker) Nov 21, 2023:
@ Phil Now come across the same phrase translated as "to be rejected" which is in line with your "ignored". Not sure that "s`affranchir" was the best word in the source language.
ph-b (X) Nov 21, 2023:
to ignore?
Apart from the obvious "to free yourself from/to escape", how about "to ignore", as in "not to pay attention to/to take notice of" ? Isn't ignoring something like not letting yourself be bothered by/freeing yourself from its consequences?
Emmanuella Nov 21, 2023:
Thanks
Bashiqa (asker) Nov 21, 2023:
@ Emmanuella - Parasitic or pollution Parasitic or pollution
Emmanuella Nov 21, 2023:
What about parasite ?
abe(L)solano Nov 21, 2023:
yes, original translation isn't accurate your reading is right, i.e. to avoid any light 'pollution'

I see it more like this with the precise choice perhaps depending on the mechanism behind this effect.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Johannes Gleim : The proposal should have been supported with appropriate references. As it is, the translation appears vague and unsure.

eliminates (the need for)

One of the advantages of this technique is that it eliminates the need for ambient optical radiation or daylight during measurements.
Note from asker:
Why would you need light pollution or daylight?
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : No, just 'eliminates'.

Synchronous fluorescence spectrometry (SFS) has been extensively used in multicomponent analysis. The spectra are obtained through the simultaneous scanning of the excitation and the emission monochromators of a spectrofluorimeter, with a fixed wavelength difference (Δλ) between them. In the synchronous spectra, the sensitivity associated with fluorescence is maintained while offering several advantages: narrowing of spectral bands, an enhancement in selectivity by spectral simplification and a decrease of measurement time in multicomponent analysis

Detection of BaP using conventional fluorescence spectrometry suffers from interference from the homologues of BaP. Synchronous fluorescence spectrometry can simplify spectra, promote selectivity and reduce light scattering interference, making it particularly suitable for analysis of trace PAHs in the environment.

Proposal for translation of 2nd phrase, or similar:
This technique has the particular advantage of allowing measurements to be made without interfering ambient optical radiation or daylight.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Schtroumpf : DeepL seems clearer: "One of the advantages of this technique is that it allows measurements to be made without the interference of ambient optical radiation or daylight."

It is up to the questioner to choose the most appropriate translation for the context; incidentally, I had only given one translation variant and implied others.
agree Annette Fehr : I think the key idea here is that this microsopy technique eliminates or lessens the risk of ambient light causing interference with the measurements.

escape

any ambient (parasitic) light pollution or daylight.

s'affranchir : rid o.s. of..., Collins.

'One of the advantages of this (technique oft in FRE & DEU:) technology is that it enables measurements to escape / stylistically balanced: to be taken whilst escaping/ any ambient light pollution or daylight.'

BTW: parasitisme in the law > a passing-off action in tort.
Example sentence:

Cincinnati Observatory astronomer Dean Regas gives his picks for places to escape light pollution and see more stars than you could ever imagine ...
