French term

fréquence harmonique de la fréquence de modulation

French to English Science Physics Spectrometry
Context:

This has been translated as:
harmonic frequency of the modulation frequency
Should this be harmonic frequency of the frequency modulation?

TIA Chris.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Nov 23, 2023:
@ Phil For better understanding:
The fundamental frequency is also called the 1st harmonic; the other harmonics are known as higher harmonics. As all harmonics are periodic at the fundamental frequency, the sum of harmonics is also periodic at that frequency. The set of harmonics forms a harmonic series.
:
The nodes of a vibrating string are harmonics.
:
Harmonics may also be called "overtones", "partials" or "upper partials". The difference between "harmonic" and "overtone" is that the term "harmonic" includes all of the notes in a series, including the fundamental frequency (e.g., the open string of a guitar) while the term "overtone" only includes the pitches above the fundamental.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic

The best way to compare the harmonics is with a string in which both the fundamental and the higher octaves, e.g. c', c'', c''', resonate.
These can be analysed by Fourier analysis

See:
Fourier transform of bass guitar time signal of open string A note (55 Hz).

As a graduate in electrical engineering, I also had to study Fourier analysis.

harmonic (frequency) of the (optical) modulating frequency

In this study, we propose and demonstrate the use of a multiple harmonics of sinusoidal modulation as an intermediate alternative to the widely used modulation methods: sinusoidal and square-wave modulation.
:
Consequently, a further increase in the modulation frequency will result in a negligible improvement in the ARW. On the other hand, RIN is still the dominant source of noise. In principle, increasing the number of harmonics in the modulation to 𝑁ℎ=4 or more can decrease the RIN.

Signals at the modulation frequency and its harmonics were calculated by digital phase-sensitive detection. The number of harmonics with signal intensity greater than noise increases as the ratio of the modulation amplitude to the narrowest peak increases.
:
The multiharmonic reconstruction methodology means that the selection of the modulation amplitude that can be used without spectral distortion is no longer tightly tied to the linewidth of the narrowest line.

The self-generated Floquet modulation includes first and second harmonics, which are contributed to by linear and nonlinear processes from the weak-dressed field, respectively. The self-generated Floquet modulation dresses the alignment absorption spectra into two continua.

Two multi-harmonic detection methods for wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) systems are presented and compared. The two possibilities discussed in this paper are: simultaneous curve fitting of multiple harmonic spectra, and reconstruction of the transmission from harmonic coefficients.

In order to smooth the clumsy clause, I suggest reordering the particles as follows: "... configured to use a harmonic frequency of the optical modulating frequency ..."

neutral philgoddard : "Harmonic of the modulation frequency" is probably correct, but then you contradict this in your last sentence. I'm no physicist, but you can't say "frequency of the frequency". And your last five references aren't relevant.
