Norwegian term

gravferdsbyrå

Norwegian to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
In a glossary:

"BYRÅ
Kortform for begravelsesbyrå eller gravferdsbyrå"

As you can see, I need to distinguish the two.

This example is the sort of thing that is currently driving me nuts: "Hallingdal gravferdsbyrå vart etablert i 1995. Frå 2014 er byrået ein del av Jølstad og er begravelsesbyrået for heile Hallingdal."
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 funeral home
3 Funeral Bureau (Parlo/u/r)

Discussion

Charles Ek (asker) Dec 19, 2023:
I closed this question without awarding points because no one addressed the issue of why two different terms are used. It is NOT a matter of redundancy. My source document and the example sentence I provided both do that. I landed (independently) on "funeral home" for "gravfedsbyrå" and "mortuary" for "begravelsesbyrå".

funeral home

Begravelsesbyrå or gravferdsbyrå are just two names for the same service
Peer comment(s):

agree Elisabeth Maurland : Yes, I don’t know why you have to distinguish between the two.

Norwegian term (edited): gravferdsbyrå (NN)

Funeral Bureau (Parlo/u/r)

...heile = Nynorsk / New Norwegian.

begravelsesbyrå : Cemetery Bureau - works e.g. in CA, USA rather than in the UK where Funeral Parlour is understandable but not Cemetery Parlour (cf. Crematorium or 'Crematory'). Note also as an organization in New York: The Bureau of Funeral Directing.

gravferd: burial; internment vs. begravelse: burial, both Einar Haugen.
Example sentence:

Hallingdal Funeral Bureau - Steinar Aa
