What do they mean by "reprezentativní" - "imposing", "impressive" or something more specific?

I doubt they mean "characteristic/typical" if they're saying it's the only one!

STU LOOK AT THIS future reference. Weeks later, "stately home" just popped into my head. I don't know how d'uh this is, but worth considering, so put it here and made a mental note to come back to this question when and if.

definitely not representative ("typical") here. False friend most of the time. As you say, very difficult to translate. I agree with Šárka that the English word "residence" already incorporates the "reprezentativní" bit. Looking up my own translation memories, I see that in the past I have used "formal residence", which might work for you here. To be perfectly honest, I can't think of anything better than "country pile" here (though I know it's the wrong register).

I have trouble with these words "reprezentativní" and "reprezentační" (both used - more than I've ever seen before - in this long text). Both of them often end up as "representative" (or "representational") in translations into English, and it often looks strange in English.

neutral Stuart Hoskins : As per your explanation, that's the point. "reprezentativní" means "intended to impress", not "impressive", and while "impressive" works in some cases, that is not the primary meaning here. If only "impressivable" were a word. :-)

I belive that anything like "representative" is redundant in English as "residence" as such means "representativní rezidence" nad "country" is correct for "venkovský"
