This challenge seems impossible. The only way would be to consider saying "so-called 'lower'" Middle Ages instead of Early Middle Ages. On Google there are a few hits for this expression in English from what appeara to be native English sites, though most of them are obviously translations. Then you could say:
" . . . decline -- the low point of the so-called 'lower' Middle Ages."
Other than something like this, I don't see how you can stretch to make the pun in English.
