Italian term
40 braccia (old measurement)
Italian to English

I believe this is a measurement of length, but could anyone tell me what the equivalent would be in metres? The term appears in the following description of a library:
"...un salone di 40 braccia, con accanto altri quattro locali di otto, ed attaccati ad essi sette vani....."

Though the others have already given you pointers on this, I'm posting an answer to give you an invaluable reference I've used quite a bit!
It's the online conversion site, and if you go to "all length measurements" you'll find obscure measurements like the bor, the barleycorn, the bee space (nice name!), the diraa and plenty more. The polegada! The sadzhen! (For those of you who were wondering.)
You just type in the measurement you need and it converts for you too!
From the home page, you can also find everything you need about volume, area, etc.

Comment: "Thanks to you all for your help on this one. From my further research a "braccia" does indeed seem to vary in length. I'm choosing this answer however, because of the invaluable reference Catherine has provided. Thanks Catherine!"

circa 25 metri
Can't find a conversion, but both of these documents say anout "25 metri"
I would be septical of any one measure, however, since the braccio could vary from plce to place. Here are some examples:

40 ells
An ell comes from "elbow" and was equivalent to 45 inches or 115 cm. See website below.

meters
This is a measure of length (I believe it to be Galileo's measure). 1 braccio=0.6 meters, therefore 40 braccia would be 24 meters in length.
