If you're speaking of bacteria, use "bacterial strains".

Not that it\'s terribly significant or anything, but Google says:

\"wild strains\" = 11,700 hits
\"wild cultures\" = 406 hits

It might be worthwhile to check out some of the hits.

culture

Usually "bacterial culture" is used to refer to strains of bacteria grown for yoghurt making etc.

As Martin notes, this could be a UK/US thing. We used to make homemade Yoghurt and we bought \"cultures\" to start them off not strains. However, if I were referring to medicinal work on bacteria and had to refer to individual samples with differences I would indeed refer to them as strains.
