to hang oneself

It's a metaphor for getting oneself into an extremely dangerous situation. When using it, a contextual distinction must be made as to whether that was done wittingly or unwittingly - taking a calculated but potentially fatal risk, or doing something really, really stupid.

Yes, after reading the responses, the headline needs a qualifier: \'to possibly hang oneself\' is more accurate.

Performing an action(or a course of action) that will definitely get you into trouble. There's a high risk involved and hardly any chance of a positive outcome.
