neutral Refugio : I think the key word mentioned in your Webster's definition is "sudden," the implication being that as suddently as it came, it could go. That is the difference between a cold snap and a cold wave.

In my understanding, there are two general differences between \'cold snap\' and \'cold wave.\' The cold snap can be local and of shorter duration; the cold wave can be of broader extension and longer duration. Take your pick according to your context.
