various human emotions and desires

I agree with Li-chuan.

The popular usage nowadays is 七情六欲. The so-called 七情 are "joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, hate, and desire, whereas the Chinese herbal medicine doctor lists七情 slightly different as “Joy, anger, melancholy, brooding, sorrow, fear and shock”. In your question, you have 五情. I wonder what other 2 “human emotions” have been dropped. Because the differences in numbers, I suggest to use "various" instead of actual numbers. As for 六欲,they are rarely known by people. I think they are (not in particular order): Mouth (eat), nose (smell), ear (hear), eye (watch), hands (touch) and sexual organs (sex).

I just checked another dictionary \"Practical Chinese-English Encyclopedic Handbook\" printed by Eurasia Book Co. It explains the 六欲 in the Buddhistical point of view, namely, \"color, form, carriage, voice, softness, and feature.\" Now you have it. However, I still like my previous explanation better.

hierarchy of needs

Not a literal translation, but I think a close western approximation of the concept. Much as Chinese doctors and thinkers have attempted to categorize and summarize human desires, so have western psychologists, using this concept.
