"The Six Polarities:
The first archetypes (yin/yang, positive/negative, forward/back, male/female.) reiterate their division into stronger and weaker sides. Fire is yang of the yang, while air is the yin of the yang, earth is the yang of the yin, while water is the yin of the yin. So the elements are naturally grouped into opposing pairs:
Fire and Air are polar opposites.
Earth and Water are polar opposites.
Thus the twelve signs fall into six polar pairs.
