Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Apr 22, 2004:
Sorry. But beholder did not fit in very well. To stiff. Daarom vroeg ik in tweede instantie een synoniem van viewer. Ik ben zoekende; meer niet.
AllisonK (X) Apr 22, 2004:
Adela, how would we, as answerers know it was out of place if all we're given is the expression itself? Not very fair if you ask me......good luck with the rest of your texts.
Non-ProZ.com Apr 22, 2004:
Allison. Thank you very much. But even in the Dutch text the word beschouwer is a bit out of place and beholder does not fit at all.
AllisonK (X) Apr 21, 2004:
Sorry, but beholder is VERY commonly used also for other non-biblical contexts.......it's up to you, but 'viewer' or a synonym thereof is really not a good choice - this is a common idiom and should not be interpreted otherwise - just a suggestion
Non-ProZ.com Apr 21, 2004:
Beholder is too biblical. Een synoniem van viewer graag; en bedankt.

That\'s if you don\'t like \"beholder\":

\"In regards to painting technique, the term indicates the application of a thick opaque layer of paint that is immediately evident to the observer\'s eye.\"

Peer comment(s):

agree AllisonK (X) : I stand corrected - but I do have to stick with my idiom argument - it's up to Adela but if she wants to keep the idiomatic essence, it should be translated as 'beholder'

That's why I agreed with you! :-)
agree writeaway : I spy with my little eye........ well, anyway the eye's have it! :-) But the eye of the beholder does really get my vote-it SO traditional. anything else will sound 'translated'.

I guess it all boils down to have you view it, and whether we can see eye to eye on this one! :)
agree Kate Hudson (X) : This works too!
