most of the cloths were acquired from the s until the end of the s. This can
probably be explained by the history of the colonial period and the lives of most

: I don’t think 'Indies' is the correct term here in English. 'Indies' are independent films/bands, etc. See: http://goo.gl/T3aCVV / Do you have any more references to back up your claim, apart from the historiaevents.nl one? / dat heet 'te vrij vertalen'

: Indies is definitely not the right term in this context for the same reasons as Michael has already stated. In English "Indie" is short for "Independent" as in record labels.

Discussion
The expression 'Indies Dutchmen' does not refer to 'people (that is: Dutch people who were born in Holland, to Dutch parents) who have spent a considerable amount of time living in the former Dutch East Indies'. It refers to Indos.
EN: 'Indo': of mixed European (or European-American) and Asian parentage
This is taken entirely out of context.
The words 'Indischgast' and 'Indischman' refer to Dutch people who have spent a considerable amount of time living in the former Dutch East Indies. This is very different than 'Indos' (in either Dutch or English), which refers to the ethnicity of a specific group of people. See, for example Oxford's definition of Indo: 'Indo: of mixed European (or European-American) and Asian parentage.'
- - - This might be true, but this surely isn’t the first time an English speaker will encounter a foreign word in their life. Furthermore, the way you are using 'Indies' in your answer sounds pretty foreign to me too.
C. "people who have spent" komt me bekend voor. - - - I have no idea what you are talking about here. Can you please explain?
"In Dutch they are referred to as 'Indische Nederlanders' (Indies Dutchmen) or Indo (short for Indo-European)."
"Scholars writing in English use the terms "Indië," "the Dutch East Indies," "the Netherlands Indies," and "colonial Indonesia" interchangeably"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_Indies
"Indies" is dan nog helemaal niet zo gek...
Overigens zou ik het zo doen:
Indischgasten (lit.: guests from the Indies/Indiesguests; people who have spent a long time in the former Dutch East Indies)

After the Baron passed away in 1863, his eldest son Arnold inherits the prestigious building. Some years later, he sells it to a hotelier named Paulez who donates it to his daughter.
@Freek: I don't really disagree with you here, but my choice is based on the context. it's a newspaper article (that's why I placed it first under art/literary) about a Jewish 'Indischgast' that survived World War II, her story. She refers to her Dutch companions every time in quotations as 'Indischgasten'. It's a very specific word used by one of the Indischgasten to identify that specific population group. Your suggestion could be used well in other contexts, but in this one, after having read all the answers and discussion entries, I'm going for the original word.
