Dutch term or phrase: Aanduiding naamgebruik
Aanduiding naamgebruik

In the Netherlands, a person has the right to use their spouse's name or a combination of their names for official purposes after marriage. The person informs the municipality of their new married name and this will be the one used in correspondence and for tax and administrative purposes. However, the name on their passport doesn't change and their actual name remains the one on their birth certificate. (Art 9(1) BW)

By contrast, in the UK, a person has the right to change their official name after marriage and the marriage certificate can be used as legal evidence. The person simply needs to inform all of the relevant authorities to use their new name on all official documents, including their passport.

verzoek > a request designating... and predicated on Tina V's comments.

In the UK, pace Phil G., a unilateral deed poll can be used for the purpose.

Example sentence(s):
  • A deed poll is a form of documentary evidence that you’ve adopted a new name, but there are other forms of acceptable evidence.

agree  philgoddard: Maybe request would be better, because you're not asking their permission.

  -> Thanks, Phil. I'm not sure about either application or request now. The person is really notifying the municipality of their new name for official purposes.

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): Technically it's not really a name change but a change in the name you want to use. Your birth name will always remain on file.
