As in, the 'topper tussen Anderlecht en Standaard".
The meaning is not in question, but I need to know specifically how the British would say it. "Top match"? "Crucial match"? Or do they just use 'match'? I could just wait for 'Match of the Day' this evening, but don't really have the time.
Thanks.

clash
is a common word to use for matches between top teams. If appropriate, you could also say 'top-of-the-table clash', which gets loads of ghits. Or 'premier league clash', again if appropriate.

Comment: "Both answers were helpful and spot on, but am choosing this one because it expands my options -- I had never heard of it referred to as a t-o-t-t-clash, but they indeed use it often.
Thanks."

top match between rivals
I'd personally translate it like this, making it a little more interesting!
"The top match between rivals Anderlecht and Standaard"
If you feel you'd be taking too many liberties by using the term "rivals", leaving it out would work as well, as in "The top match between Anderlecht and Standaard", as you indicated yourself.
