Flange inspection based on derivative
Search for dents by finding pairs of positive and negative changes of the derivative of the contour.
A dent starts with a negative derivative (descent) followed by a positive derivative (ascent).
When the flange is extracted properly, four methods can be used to inspect the flange.
The first one is based on the derivative of the contour of the flange.
When threshold before segmentation is unchecked, the min derivative value is used to change the image. The Min derivative value determines how sharp the edges should be to be classified as an edge.

  -> If you look at the reference material (image) from OP, you can see that we in fact are talking calculations = mathematics, in some kind of software program, it even states "derivative calculations" in the image.

disagree  Louise Jørgensen: "derivative" (the word being asked about) and "deviation" (your suggestion) are two different terms. Quote: "Standard deviation in statistics and a derivative in calculus are two different concepts used in different fields."
