English term

to get the hammer and make tea

English to French Social Sciences International Org/Dev/Coop
It's about the vivid testimony from a young boy facing a humanitarian crisis, who witnesses :
“My siblings are young and my father was killed by an airstrike, so I decided to work, so I can at least afford to buy them a bag of bread.
*They tell me to get the hammer and make them tea*”.
It obviously looks like a typical English idiom which I cannot manage to translate into French.
Here is my suggestion (but I'm not sure) :
"Ils me disent que c’est à moi de faire bouillir la marmite".
Your collaborative help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks !
