A question of punctuation? Goldcoaster: What you say would be correct in a different context, but here the contrast is between academic training in the sense of having degrees and writing textbooks and photography as a profession which does not demand academic training. The punctuation leaves a lot to be desired!! IMO the second clause should either be completely in brackets or between dashes, then the whole thing would be much clearer.

I "studied" at the university to gain my academic title - if I "trained" in the university it was in track&field, football, basketball etc

disagree Kim Metzger : Your understanding of "training" is too narrow if you associate it only with sports, etc. Academics frequently refer to their "training" rather than education.
