Bubo virginianus = Amerikanischer Uhu / Virginia-Uhu
Hi Patricia,
Again the Internet was very helpful. The scientific name is "Bubo virginianus". Bubo means that this owl is part of the Uhu familie. The German name is "Amerikanischer Uhu" or more common "Virginia-Uhu"
Unter the link "http://donb.photo.net/photo_cd/a/b57.html" you'll find a beautiful picture of this bird. I also left two reliable sources for the German name: the Berlin Zoo and the Uni Hohenheim. The last page is very interesting, as it lists English, scientific and German names.

it is a big bird! - a Grosse Ohreule
Langenscheidt & Duden - Just as logical as horned owel because the name refers to tufts of feathers on the head that could be taken for ears or horns.

(Virginischer) Uhu (Bubo virginianus)
Having seen both Great Horned Owls and Uhus, I immediately thought Uhu must be it. The European Uhu ist Bubo bubo. Webster's bears out Great Horned Owl = Bubo virginianus. Langenscheidt confirms Virginischer Uhu (Bubo virginianus).

Sorry! Sorry!
I have just finished looking at all the great references above for "Bubo virginianus". I am now sure they are 100% correct and that the Duden and Langenscheidt name "Ohreule" is wrong. One of them probably got it wrong ages ago and it was then copied by the other. Strangely enough they also had the wrong name for the "burrowing owl", they called it a "Höhleneule". Now I have learned not to use those two dictionaries for birds.
