We deal here with equipment mostly for bush airplanes (Beavers, Otters, etc.), but also for military aircraft all of which may need to land on rough i.e. muddy ground. To prevent them from sinking into the mud for example, they have a non-retractable landing gear with big tires.
This explanation was given by two very veteran USAF pilots who used to fly B-47s and C-5s during the Cold War.

I have two aeronautical dictionaries which have the following entries:
flotation landing gear: Notwasserungsausruestung (Aerospace/Cescotti)
and Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik (Langenscheidt) offers Schwimmwerk, Wasserungsgestell, Schwimmergestell, Schwimmerfahrwerk, and (Seeflugzeug) Schwingenfahrwerk.
In this case I believe Schwimmerfahrwerk could serve as fairly general term for all of the above. To reassure myself I would look at the home page of Bundesamt fuer Wehrtechnik. Unfortunately, I do not know it off the top of my head but am sure that you can find it through the yahoo.de search engine.

For some reason I missed the unpaved landing. In this case Schwingenfahrwerk probably would be more suitable, even though it is preceded by Seeflugzeug.

Thjat's all I could find, basicially. A description of the "C-5 Galaxy" (that the one you're talking about?)used the sentence "The Galaxy's weight is distributed on a high flotation landing gear that has 28 wheels"; and I found another page that had "Ein hoch angesetztes Fahrgestell mit 28 Rädern"

Lockheed doesn't seem to have a German webpage (yet? *g*) so i couldn't get any info from them; I found no other pages using "hoch angesetztes Fahrgestell", though.
There are other plaens using that type of landing gear, the "Antonov 140" or the "Raytheon Beech King Air B200" but again I couldn't find anything in German on them, but maybe you've got more luck. (They appear to have a web-site at http://www.beech-hlw.de/ but it's down at the moment...)
