Infatti ho fatto anch'io la stessa supposizione. Se è così, si potrebbe rendere con "opacità/opacizzazione e ombreggiatura" oppure "opacizzazione e macchie scure". A volte, come indicavo, intende la smerigliatura, che qui è naturalmente spontanea, quasi come se la superficie fosse stata trattata con carta vetrata.
