Discussion

Martin Riordan Apr 17, 2012:
It is certainly a hangover from the old days! But is apparently still in use - cf. the Free Dictionary:
To crank: To start or operate (an engine, for example) by or as if by turning a handle.
meirs Apr 17, 2012:
bad English in the old days, one used a crank to manually start a car motor - hence the verb - to crank the car/machine. Here it becomes - the motors starts.
