for purposes and means

I am looking for clarification rather than meaning.

A sample line: For each processing activity for purposes and means determined by Google, Google is the sole Controller.

Does the phrase mean: for purposes as well as for means? Or for purposes as well as by means?

Note:
1.35M Google hits for: for purposes and means
1.06M Google hits for: for purposes and by means

I vote "by means" as well
philgoddard Jan 27, 2023:
"For means" doesn't make sense to me. "By means" does.
Christopher Schröder Jan 27, 2023:
Joke? Oddly I get FOUR hits for "for purposes and means".

Linguistically it says "for means". Logically it must mean "by means". Legally, well it's a joke if Google's lawyers can't be arsed to write clearly.

IANAL but I'm not sure that's the point.

**Well, I understand quite well what exactly you mean by saying that it's kind of difficult for to figure out and to translate the ''purposes'', meaning intentions, scopes and perspectives of a number of personnal data and on the other hand the ''means'', meaning manners, ways, routes for some company to follow in order to proceed or deal with its personal data processing. If I were you, I would leave it the way it is or I would ultimately use it in some more accurate syntactical order like ''regarding purposes [or scopes, causes] and means [or manners, processing ways]. The main thing is for you to understand what do the examples precisely mean by using the terms ''purposes and means (manners)'' for all kinds of companies' personal data processing.

Why is it important to distinguish between controllers and processors? This is the main thing for you to understand and from this understanding you'll figure out when and how someone is controller or processor in a personal data processing activity.

***And for a simplier answer to your simple question: yes. The literal clarification you're asking for this particular sentence is: "with regards to the purposes (= intentions, causes, reasons) as well as to the means (=manners, ways of personal data processing) etc
Note from asker:
Hi Anastasia, thank you for the reference. My question is actually "simple". Should the phrase be taken literally, what does it mean by for means? (i.e. does "means" here have a meaning other than "resources or tools to achieve something"? It sounds strange to me that we have to process data for the sake of some resources/tools as if they are purposeful beings that can demand something.)

agree Mihaela C N Plamadeala : This is definitely the correct answer. For each processing activity for purposes (how data is controlled) and for means (why the data is used)

Thank you! [but the ''why'' stands for ''purposes'' and the ''how'' for ''means'']
