Trial of a fungicide
The company concerned is carrying out a trial of a new fungicide on different species of grasses, planted next to each other.
"Dispositif en blocs randomisés à 4 répétitions avec temoins inclus + 4 faux témoins (une parcelle témoin est imbriquée toutes les trois parcelles traitées).
A control product (a licensed fungicide) is being used. In the above sentence, where 'témoins' is mentioned, they are referring to this control product. However, I have never come across 'faux témoins' before. I'm not sure what this can refer to, as there has been no mention of any other products.
Does anyone know what this could be. Any help would be much appreciated.

untreated checks or untreated controls
I worked in this field for 23 years before becoming a translator (although I worked with insecticides rather fungicides, but the experimental design is the same). I agree with my colleagues, I'm just trying to help out. We called these experiments screening trials and we did exactly as your text says, compared several experimental products against each other and usually at least one standard (temoin) which is a registered or labeled (betters terms than "licensed") product and an untreated check or untreated control. And we usually had 4 "reps" or "blocks" (repetitions) of test plots, just like in your text, which were in a random, different order in each rep (to account for possible within field variation), hence the name randomized complete block design. We would spray the different treatments on all 4 reps and then take data (in our case nos. of insects remaining, damage ratings, yields, etc) from each plot in each rep and then we would analyze the data statistically with one of the multiple range tests (Duncan's, LSD, etc.) and determine which treatments, if any, provided statistically better or equal control to the standard (temoin) and the untreated check (faux temoin).

Comment: "Thank you very much for your help. Although your answer was not the first one posted, I have chosed it because of the useful explanation you included. What you explained was actually what I had understood from the text, but it was very reassuring to have it all confirmed by someone who has worked in the field. "

untreated
presumably for the purpose of the trial, one that has nothing on it / no effect, like a placebo in medicine

: Yes, there is one 'control' plot out of every four, and another four completely untreated plots. In a way, can be regarded as a 'faux témoin' because in reality there is no 'control' substance

untreated replicate
C.3.3.3 Year 1 trials - are usually three replicate incomplete block designs and
will be fungicide treated. Other designs may be used if appropriate. An extra
untreated replicate will be sown for disease observation at selected sites.
