Est-ce que "software development" revêt la même idée ? Merci !

Discussion

Muriel Martin (asker) Apr 3, 2006:
JCEC Do you, as a software publisher, develop software yourself? Or do you "only" publish them? Thanks!
Oliver Walter Apr 2, 2006:
(Late response: I've been away for 2 days). "publishing" or "development and publishing" depending on the wider context not provided, on your taste and on the text style. One often can't translate *words*, only *texts.*
Muriel Martin (asker) Mar 31, 2006:
Oliver, the URL you're mentioning is precisely explaining the roles of a software publishing company: development, publishing and marketing, all 3 of them: "Cambridge Software Publishing develops, publishes and distributes the Keypoint range of software solutions." So I suppose "publishing" covers it all?!
Muriel Martin (asker) Mar 31, 2006:
I think I'll sleep on it over the weekend and will come back to you on Monday :-) Thanks!
Sue Pasco (X) Mar 31, 2006:
yes, publishing would be a "cover-all" for both processes. Though I must admit I'm puzzled by Lydia's suggestion that "software publishing" is practically never used in the UK.
Muriel Martin (asker) Mar 31, 2006:
I checked with my client and the term "édition" refers both to the development part and the marketing part (carried out by the same firm). Would "publishing" refer to both phases as well?

software publishing

not really development - software could in theory be developed but never published :-)

agree Charlie Bavington : Indeed, I have myself written lots that was never published, although it was released; also perhaps worth pointing out that for web publishing (which is different), French uses "publier"

software development

Depending on the particular use this term could well be software development to describe the creation of software. Although it is written, it isn't published as such.

In the UK software publishing is rarely used if ever.

I work for a software development company (tester/QA analyst)

Perhaps you could provide us with the context you are trying to translate .

In my experience (8 years and counting) of the software development industry in the UK, the term software publishing is not used. Websites/pages can be published, but not software. It is standard practice to use the term software development for the whole software lifecycle from user requirement to software release and support.

In response to Susan's comments above I can only repeat that in my professional experience the term software publishing is not used in preference to development except for web related releases. Google searches show this up quite clearly. I'll leave it at that. Good Luck Muriel.

disagree JCEC : I'm a software publisher and our UK correspondents all speak of software publishing.

software development and publishing

If the client says it covers both, it needs both names. To me, development and publishing are distinct activities. In the ref, dev and pub are named separately.
