Talking about construction of mooring dolphins
"Les ducs d'albe sont constitués des éléments en acier suivants:
-des pieux foncés dans le sol
...
- les parois de défense avec les bois de frottement et pneus."

I think "frottement" is maybe chafing, and with "pneus" I am picturing tyres along the pier to cushion the impact when the vessels are moored, but how should I tranlsate "bois de frottement"?

disagree Tony M : Wouldn't make much sense in the context as given, and doesn't really fit even as a literal translation

reinventing the wheel

Damage to fender piles or their connections to the main structure by longitudinal forces can be avoided by spiking TIMBER RUBBING STRIPS onto the faces of the fenders. These will be torn off by a severe impact but the pile will remain relatively undamaged.

Googling "rubbing strip" without "breasting dolphin" I also found this:

Hmm, if I were a breasting dolphin and wanted to avoid being damaged, I'd make a point of not going to Togo ...
Peer comment(s):

agree Miranda Joubioux (X) : This seems the most likely and the Google books reference is spot on.
