flared eaves hip rafter
Imagine a rafter running from the top of the wall to the ridge of the roof. Now imagine the same on a wall perpendicular to that first wall, and forming a right angle with it. The rafter common to both roof planes is the hip rafter.
Now, on both roof planes, imagine a short piece of rafter sized timber fixed to the top surface of the rafters and projecting beyond the side of the building, at a shallower angle than the main roof slope. This forms a flared eaves, and is called "coyautage" in French. Strictly speaking the "coyau" is the cocking piece or triangular wedge of wood serving to set the angle for the flared eaves rafter, but there are other ways of achieving the same result.
