French term

Vitesse de Hazen au débit nominal

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) water treatment
This does not look right. Hazen units are used to measure the color produced by dissolving 1 ppm platinum in the form of chloroplatinic acid. I can find no references to speed in relation to Hazen. However, as this is related to flow, I assume that it is the speed at which the colour is dispersed. I should be grateful for confirmation (or otherwise) and an appropriate form of words.

B D Finch (asker) Apr 19, 2010:
@ kashew 2 Your reference is also from the same poorly translated, Romanian source that was previously posted by Clanola.
B D Finch (asker) Apr 19, 2010:
@ kashew When I googled "Hazen speed" with "wastewater", all the results seemed to be from related patents - i.e. a single source. I note that one also gets references to "Hazen speed dating"!

2 Hazen readings;colour one in dim'less units and Characteristics, decantation and throughflow:
• The Settle Solids Interceptor is defined by its Flow Rate in litres per second and its
Hydraulic Head in metres per hour. The hydraulic head, or "Hazen speed", is the ratio
between the flow rate and the separation area, that is:
A. Static decantation:
Requires a decantation tank with an
extremely large surface, and a settling rate
that is usually low.
B. Lamellar decantation:
Works on the trajectory to separate out
continuously particles of different size and
mass.
This method improves the settling rate
considerably, meaning that the settling
volume may be reduced.
• For particles to settle effectively, the movement of the water through the interceptor has
to be laminar (1). All turbulent flow (2) is therefore to be prevented.
1. Laminar movement is regular,
fluid and rectilinear
2. Turbulent movement
is "disordered" vortex flow
This means that the oil interceptor
with coalescing filter is not suitable for particle settling.
• The purpose of the settle solids
interceptor is to trap particles with a
density of 2.4 and a diameter below 100
microns, which includes about 80% of the
solid particles contained in runoff....
Claire Nolan Apr 18, 2010:
Hazen speed = hydraulic head I think this is a different hazen measurement, nothing to do with color.

B D Finch (asker) Apr 18, 2010:
additional information Seeing as the subsequent information is "• 0,73 m/h", I suppose that it must be the speed at which the colouration moves. However, I don't understand why that speed should be any different from the flow rate of the water.

Hazen volocity at nominal flowrate

Weijman LAMELLA Unit
Primary settler used to purify domestic water/municipal effluent. Operates according to the counter current or upflow principle. Well suited for the treatment of waste water with good settling abilities. Low operating costs, low FOOTPRINT and high performance etc.

The INCLINED PLATE CLARIFIER, OR LAMELLA, WAS FIRST DESCRIBED AND QUANTIFIED BY HAZEN in 1904. The lamella consists of a series of closely spaced flat plates inclined at an angle of from 45 to 60 degrees from horizontal. Preconditioned water with entrained solids enters the plate pack and flows between the plates. The path length, plate spacing, and angle of the plate are the usual engineering variables. As the water flows between pairs of plates, the heavy solids with a specific gravity higher than the surrounding water will settle onto the top surface of the lower plate, and slide down the inclined surface to be collected in the sludge hopper. Clear, near solids-free water then exits the top of the plate area and overflows an adjustable weir.

Note from asker:
Thanks Bourth. Kiwipedia does it again. I had used the term "plate settlers", but from your answer and Google, it appears that "lamella" or "lamellar" is a standard term. However, "Lamella" also appears to be a registered trade mark, so perhaps (even though it gets far fewer ghits) I should use "lamellar" unless the trade mark product is indicated. So, two for the price of one!
