French term

bakula / bacula

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general)
This term occurs in a text which narrates repairs requiring to be made to an old apartment building and in the preceding section the repairs to the false ceiling are discussed. The immediate context is as follows:

"l'expert a exigé la dépose du bakula dans le cadre de ses opérations pour constater les désordres existants au niveau du plancher haut."

My research indicates the existence of a more common variant spelling "bacula".

Discussion

Didier Fourcot Aug 1, 2016:
Proper spelling is "bacula" etymology is latin "baculum", plural bacula: walking stick (and bone in the penis in an other meaning):

@Alison That's it (and I would trust Bourth, who really did know his/her stuff). The definition immediately suggests lath and plaster to me.
Charles Davis Aug 1, 2016:
Bakula is a type of wood Commonly known as Spanish cherry in English, but I think that's a red herring here and they mean bacula.

lath and plaster ceiling

Attention Dicobat donne "wood lathing" dont la signification la plus courante est tournage de bois, la définition française est correcte par contre:
"lattis de bois.. assemblé par du fil de fer galvanisé... armature la plus traditionnelle des plâtres de plafond"
https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/bacula
Le bacula ne s'utilise qu'en plafond, d'où l'ajout de "ceiling"

En anglais "lath and plaster":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lath_and_plaster
peut s'utiliser en mur ou en plafond, la avec la variante "plaster and lath"
http://porch.com/advice/plaster-and-lath/
et "plastering on laths"
