... but my feeling is that an educated French person will probably have more knowledge of what Oxbridge calls Classics than a UK educated equivalent. On the other hand, the word "pantheon" does appear, e.g. in broadsheet news, and might well be considered part of educated vocabulary, if that doesn't sound elitist. But even well-educated younger Brits are quite often ignorant of (to me) quite well-known legends, e.g. Icarus, let alone the more obscure (to me) stuff I very occasionally see references to in translation. |
