Earlier in the paper, "battage" is also mentioned in the context of sugar cane production. I just can't get the word for it :( I'm also having trouble with "intrants". Thanks :))

Hand-milling
To mill grain by beating it by hand. (also a hard sell in PR, but I don't think that applies here!) Good luck on "intrants"; as far as I know, that's not a French word.
