as a
result of modern reading instruction, one could briefly touch on the example of mental arithmetic
which would be better not taught at all than taught the way it is. In fact, ever since it has been
taught as “calcul réfléchi”, which mixes written and mental arithmetic, actually teaching mental arithmetic means investing a lot of time to unlearn reflexes formerly taught.

Peer comment(s):

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Yes for "mental arithmetic", the idea being that calculators are not allowed and that the calculations have to be done in your head. Mental arithmetic can be written. In this particular case it is referring to addition.

complicated sums/addition

calcul additif = addition
calcul multiplicatif = multiplication
réfléchi = compliqué??? où l'on doit bien réfléchir pour trouver la solution????

or: well-reasoned sum/addition????
Peer comment(s):

agree Sheila Wilson : Would it perhaps be what we called 'problems' at school? X has a cat, Y has 2 dogs, Z has 7 hamsters: how many pets?

Thanks - sthg in that line. I also had in mind sums like 29+27 where the child needs to reason and make sure not to forget the "1 carried over" which is very different from 5+2
neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Not necessairly complicated, often the opposite in fact. The kind of calculations and workings out to be done mentally, answers can be written down, working out to be done in your head. problems are quite different./// "réfléchi" = mind, not complexity.

Not only mental arithmentic. I had in mind sums like 29+27 where the child needs to reason and make sure not to forget the "1 carried over" which is very different from 5+2
