wrist massage techniques
From a wrist massage procedure, to be used during manicures given at a health and beauty spa (same spa as my earlier question, they are not terribly great with bullet-points!):
- Commencer par la main gauche puis la main droite :
- Secouer le bras dans le vide, étirement du poignet en avant et en arrière.
- Puis étirement du poignet en maintenant l’articulation en amont et en aval.
The usual translation for "amont/aval" as "upstream/downstream" does not seem to fit here. I thought perhaps "on top" and "underneath", but maybe someone else has seen these terms in this context?

Hi Sylvia - this one seems to have slipped my attention.
This is really wierd - I don't see how it could do you any good, but then I'm not really one for massage parlours...
In step II, we have already stretched the wrist backwards (fingers pointing up) and forward (fingers "back in" towards the arm) so we can rule that out.
Here in step III, we are told to support the joint both
"en amont" ("arm side") and "en aval" (hand side).
I understand from "en maintenant", that the masseur holds the wrist in a blocked position.
So where does the stretching come in?
I've been trying for the last 10 minutes and have concluded that what we must be doing here is rotating the blocked wrist, first one way, then the other. As I said at the beginning, I don't know what possible good this would do.
The only wrist exercises I know are table tennis ones where the joint moves, generally in a circular movement.
Now, about that manicure....
