français term

les petits journaux

français vers anglais Art / Littérature Poésie et littérature
From an extract from a novel, the whole phrase is "Brigitte feuilletait ses petits journaux". I think it means "tabloids", but just need to confirm.

Discussion

amarshall (asker) Nov 28, 2007:
The novel was written in 1981, so it is unlikely it is referring to the newspaper, Le Petit Journal.
ormiston Nov 25, 2007:
when was the novel written ?

her favourite newspapers/magazines

I doubt it means tabloids. I see the meaning as in "petites affaires" which means private or favourite things. Journaux doesn't always mean newspapers either. Many French people say "journaux" for publications - a bit like they say "crayon" when they mean "stylo"...

events calendar and reviews for the arts

I am not quite sure of the proper term in English, but these would be reviews of art exhibitions, cinema, theater and books, as well as an events calendar for what is going on around town.

It really does depend on the context and time period and age of the girl. I agree that it is not tabloids, and could see "favorite magazines" working depending on the context. Without it, it is difficult to tell.
Example sentence:

"Petit journal, journal à petit format, qui s'occupe de littérature, de théâtres, de nouvelles. " from the entry under "journal" in the Littré
