French term

sans propulseur

French to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Hello

Docking in an African port and how much it costs, with no other helpful context

so what is a propulseur?

If it is a propeller, then what could a big vessel have instead of propellers?

That's what I don't get. Or does it means without using its own thrust to dock?

Thanks in advance

John Fossey Nov 23, 2018:
Ships with stern thrusters in Africa "dans un port africain je n'ai jamais vu un navire avec un propulseur ailleurs qu'à l'avant"<br>

Not likely to be true, given the volume of maritime traffic in Africa. For example, a quick Google search brings up an article about a large container ship in Port Said with a damaged stern thruster.<br>

John Fossey Nov 23, 2018:
Not necessarily "bow" thruster While "bow" thrusters are most common they are not the only configuration. Ferries, cruise ships, special purpose workboats, etc., often have stern thrusters. The source text does not specify "bow" or "stern".
florence metzger Nov 23, 2018:
c'est forcement un propulseur d'étrave
B D Finch Nov 22, 2018:
@florence what makes you think it's a "bow" one?
florence metzger Nov 22, 2018:
without bow thruster

without thruster

Large ships have bow or stern thrusters that provide lateral thrust to move them towards or away from the dock. If they don't have thrusters they will need the assistance of a tug boat to dock.
