As mentioned by me earlier, younger brothers and sisters call their elder sister as didi. In addition to it, other people may also call a lady as didi to pay her respect, if she is older than them.

A person who is called 'didi' need not be a sister in relation. Sometimes, a girl or lady who happens to be elder in age or status is called 'didi' by her juniors as a respect to her. Even, students call a lady tutor or teacher as 'didi' and ladies may also call each other as didi when they are not related or familiar with each other.
